BUTTERFLY WE ARE ALL UNIQUE ROSE TEE

We Are All Unique These are the words we said almost every day for 7 years when a stranger asked, “What’s wrong with her?” SMA impacted Gwendolyn’s every muscle so she used several machines to help her breathe, eat, and swallow and her wheelchair was quite large because she needed to be relatively flat most of the time. There was no blending in. At first, that question stung. But in shifting the perspective, we were able to reclaim the narrative. I now say these same words when my children ask a whole host of questions about people and places that are different from what they know. Difference isn’t bad — it’s just different. Each of us has varied and unique qualities that make the world so beautiful. Just like the butterflies of the world, humans contain a multitude of colorful dimensions.
